Unshaved Hair Transplant

What is Hair Transplant without Shaving?

Many men don´t like the idea of shaving their heads before a hair transplant. FUE hair transplant without shaving is performed for patients who cannot afford to have noticeable signs of hair transplant surgery or long recovery time following the procedure. It’s a highly-specialized technique in which the surgeon carefully extracts grafts from the donor area without having to shave the entire head. In fact, it is not a different method, but different technique which can be applied depending on the preference of the person. Different hair transplantation methods such as DHI hair transplant or FUE hair transplant can be applied without shaving the hair.

Normal hair transplantation techniques are also used in unshaved hair transplantation. It can be either performed by partial hair transplantation method or unshaved full hair transplantation method. In partial hair transplantation, only a small area (10 x 5 cm) of the nape area is shaved and about 1000 – 1500 grafts are removed from here thanks to regional shaving.  In this way, a solution to the sparse hair problem can be provided. However, for intense hair loss and baldness, it is necessary to either shave completely or continue the whole procedure without a full shave.

How Is Hair Transplantation Performed Without Shaving?

In unshaved hair transplantation, transplantation is performed when the patient’s hair is at the desired length. The process begins with the determination of the area where the patient’s hair follicles will be collected. It is important that this area is a region where hair will grow back strongly.

Then, by using one of the hair transplantation methods that is most suitable to the patient, the surgeon must choose an ideal donor area where a small area will be shaved. The surgery then continues removing one by one the follicles from the donor area and inserting them in the recipient area, as in a normal intervention with the FUE method. Since the hair follicles are taken from the donor area and implanted one by one and transplanted one by one in the same way, the operation requires great dedication, time and patience. Therefore, the process may take longer than shaved hair transplantation.

What Methods Is It Done Using?

Three different methods can be used in unshaved hair transplantation: DHI (completely unshaved method), FUE (partially shaved method), and normal hair transplantation (FUT). DHI, is the most advanced unshaved hair transplantation method.  It doesn’t require a shave. However, the donor area needs to be shaved if FUE and FUT methods perform. There is no need to open channels in unshaved hair transplantation. Hair follicles are transplanted one by one with with the medical pencil called Choi, without opening a channel. used by the surgeon. In addition, a more natural appearance is obtained and the gaps can be filled more densely (DHI).

In addition, the recovery rate in unshaven operation is higher than in standard hair transplantation. In the partially shaved transplantation method (FUE), only the hair in the donor area is shaved to a short length of 1-3 millimeters, the hair is again picked one by one, as in the DHI technique, implanted in the direction of growth.

While in FUE technique, the collected grafts are kept in a special solution, in the DHI technique, grafts are implanted immediately after the extraction by minimizing the possibility of damage to hair follicles. FUE technique is more advantageous for transplantation in larger areas, whereas the DHI technique may be preferred for a more dense appearance.

What are the Advantages of Hair Transplantation without Shaving?

The biggest advantage of this application is that the patients can immediately return to their social life after a hair transplant. It is a good option for women who want to have a hair transplant but do not want to lose their long hair at the same time or for patients who experience partial baldness or rarity. Another advantage of unshaved hair transplantation is the fact that hair follicles can be implanted in the targeted area much more densely. Besides, symptoms such as rash, swelling that occur after the procedure heal in a much shorter time than the hair transplant with shaving.

On the other hand, unshaved hair transplantation is an intervention more complicated, less hygienic and can have more side effects. In addition, the procedure requires much more attention and time.  However, there is absolutely no downside to this application in terms of the success of hair transplant results.
