Closed Rhinoplasty

What Is Closed Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery is one of the most preferred and popular aesthetic operations in the world. Closed rhinoplasty surgery is one of the most frequently used methods in rhinoplasty surgeries.  In this method, the experience of the surgeon is very important. In contrast to open surgery, there is no need to open the soft tissues inside the nose and the skin of the nose during closed surgery

Aesthetic rhinoplasties are usually preferred to treat deformities, breathing difficulties that occur after injury or to get a better appearance. Rhinoplasty surgery, which has been performed for many years, can now be performed without leaving a suture mark thanks to scientific innovations and advances in technology. Closed rhinoplasty is performed by entering directly into the nostrils. In this method, incisions occur in the nose, and surgical incisions are not made at the tip of the nose. Closed technique is usually preferred for tip plasty.

How Is Closed Rhinoplasty Performed?

Closed rhinoplasty operation takes about 2 to 2,5 hours and performed under general anesthesia. However, if patients do not have very important problems in the nose and there is less space to intervene, local anesthesia may also be preferred. The average length of stay in hospital in 1 day. During surgery, an incision is made through the nose with surgical instruments and in this way the required interventions are performed. Later, the operation is completed with aesthetic sutures applied on the nose.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of closed technique?

Closed rhinoplasty technique is a very difficult procedure for the surgeon. For this reason, choosing a sufficiently experienced surgeon is important for the success of rhinoplasty. The disadvantage is that the procedure is difficult from the surgeon’s point of view, because the surgeon has to perform their operations quite elaborately since the area of operation is quite restricted.

However, the biggest advantage is the fact that the recovery time is shorter than other methods as the edema and swelling after surgery recover very quickly. In addition, the absence of postoperative scarring, a more natural appearance of the nose and shorter operation time ensure a very comfortable period for the patient after the operation. Soft tissue and skin are not damaged because an incision is made inside the nose. Therefore, patients experience much less drowsiness after surgery. These operations can provide much better support of the tip of the nose.

In What Cases Is Closed Rhinoplasty Applied?

Closed rhinoplasty help to correct problems related to lower nasal tip, nasal bone curvature, nasal hump, nostril problem and nasal bridge. During this operation, rasping techniques are used without breaking. Cartilage tissue transplantation can also be performed if necessary.

How Is the Post-Operative Process?

If the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, the patient is discharged on the same day. However, the patient may need to be monitored overnight if the operation is performed by general anesthesia. Silicone splints and protective band are attached to the nose to reduce bleeding after surgery. Because these splints are breathable, patients do not experience breathing problems. In this way, there is no need to use plaster and tampons. Splints are removed after 2-3 days following the operation.  Since aesthetic stitches are applied to the nose, the sutures disappear spontaneously and do not need to be removed. For the first 48 hours after surgery, slight swelling and edema can be seen.

In closed rhinoplasty, the patient’s recovery process is shortened. They can start working at a desk with bandages on the 3th-4th day. When all conditions are normal, it looks like there was no surgery on the 12-13rd day and patients can return to their normal life after 1 week to 10 days. Following the operation, it is required to take a bath after 3 days, avoid heavy sportive activities for two months, stay away from the direct sunlight and wear a hat instead of sunglasses for 1 month. The full recovery period is 6 months. There is no scar left after surgery.
